A new trade organization called
Colorado Society for Wellness and Prevention (SCWP) met for a symposium this week at National Jewish Health, and they plan to address what they feel is an oversight in health care reform: how to improve the health of an increasingly unhealthy population. Members of the new society include Kaiser Permanente Colorado, Centura Health, Van Gilder Insurance, and LifeHealth. Founder and political consultant Cindy Sovine-Miller feels that meaningful change won’t come from focusing on insurance. LifeHealth agrees with this notion. In fact, their services center on providing clinical counseling at the worksite so employees can make meaningful behavioral changes (and employers, in return, experience greater productivity). In an article published today by Bob Mook with the
Denver Business Journal, Sovine-Miller was quoted as saying, “We have to change the focus toward personal responsibility and wellness.” Despite the fact that Colorado ranks among the top 10 healthiest states, obesity is growing at an alarming rate here.
